After decades of subpar travel guitar designs leading up to the late ‘00s, we now enjoy a Plethora of great options. Indeed, the demand for higher quality scaled-down instruments has never been higher! This is, in part due to the fact that travel guitars are for more than just travel. They make for excellent casual “around the town” guitars, couch guitars, or better-fitted options for serious young players who are still growing. Martin introduced the Dreadnought Junior on the heels of Taylor’s introduction of the GS Mini (which is, without question, one of the most popular travel guitars ever produced). Though intended to compete with the GS Mini, Martin chose to up the game a bit with the Dreadnought Jr. (and 000-Jr.) by making these models with an all solid construction. Though perhaps a little more delicate for travel purposes, we note that the all-solid construction does contribute an extra degree of refinement to these instruments. Moreover, despite its small size, one certainly detects a healthy dose of the classic Martin firm note foundation and rich low end and midrange warmth in the Dreadnought Jr. Thus, in addition to being an overall great value, the Martin Dreadnought Junior also represents a darker-voiced alternative to many other travel guitars.
